Reedley College McClarty Center for Fine and Performing Arts

Winner of the CCFC Award of Honor, the McClarty Center for Fine and Performing Arts was meticulously sculpted to provide a dramatic and world-class theatrical experience. The angular design embodies a Central Valley orange blossom in full bloom, which was chosen not only to represent the region, but also to instill tension in theatergoers prior to entering its 550-seat concert hall, studio art gallery, and sculpture garden.

Steel buckling restrained braced frames were chosen for the project’s structural system; these frames were strategically located as part of the architectural form while facilitating seismic performance. High ceilings within the lobby allow the hybrid space to serve as a dining and reception area in addition to offering standard theater trappings, including a box office, concession stand, and seating areas. At the other end of the building is a large, full-service green room offering comfort to performers prior to taking the stage.

To provide an elevated theater experience, the concert hall utilizes a combination of custom reinforced wall panels and louvered wood to absorb undesired sound while concealing the theatrical audio system. This intricate and complex system of acoustic absorption, reflection, and redirection was instrumental in realizing a fantastic auditory experience set within a highly refined, wood-filled setting. The maple woodwork also extends into the lobby, which includes a tree displaying the names of those who donated to realize this inspiring, artistic center for the community.
